In this domestic thriller with a strong romantic underpinning, The One Day You Were My Husband follows ambitious British surgical intern Carrie, who impulsively marries her Swedish boyfriend Johan on a beach in Thailand after a whirlwind romance. That same night, Thai authorities storm the beach and arrest Johan. Carrie never sees him again, and never learns the truth about what he did.
Years later, Carrie is remarried and raising twins as a stay-at-home mother when she discovers that Johan has been released and is now living in Sweden. This discovery coincides with her decision to return to surgical work and reclaim the driven version of herself she left behind. The discovery sparks intense memories of their once-in-a-lifetime romance and compels her to find out what really happened.
I enjoyed this one a lot. It’s got a lot of intrigue and plot twists, and I was invested enough in the story to stay up late reading. In addition to the question of whether Johan was living a double life when he married Carrie, the book explores relatable themes of parental aging, motherhood, and balancing career and family. These give depth to Carrie’s character beyond the central mystery of the story.
I recommend The One Day You Were My Husband for readers who like relationship-driven suspense with a strong emotional undercurrent. It’s a good choice for fans of books like The Last Thing He Told Me.
